Axle identification?

Post by Buhhdie »

Hey guys,
I have an old kit car I'm restoring that I bought off a friend of a friend (A Dutton Phaeton 2 for those interested). I was told that it has a Lotus Cortina rear axle in it, is there anyway I can confirm this? An identification plate or something?

Also along similar lines. Did the Lotus version have different rear shocks to the regular Ford Cortina?

Thanks in advance for you guys help :)

There are no identification plates on the axle , but post some pictures up and you should get some replies.

My Mk1 does have a diff identification tag. Stage 1 can provide them if you have the info.

Here's a general picture of it although it isn't brilliant. If particular angles are required just ask :)

Where is the identification tag normally located?

I'll try and take a picture and post it up.

Would Steve let me know if the procedure for posting pics is the same as it was before?

Definitely look like a ford axle you have. What do you need to know about it?

I'd say that was a mk2 lotus/1600E axle, same brakes, handbrake cable and lever on the rear of the diff, handbrake cable guide wheel above the diff and you can see where the original anti tramp brackets have been cut off.

Unfortunately I can't see that image link as I don't have the right permissions.
I just wanted to confirm if it was definitely a Lotus axle and what the differences between it and a regular Cortina axle are.
