SPU 995D where are you now?

Long gone but not forgotten - SPU 995D, 1966 Mk.1, red with a white stripe (but was originally red with a gold stripe). Bought from the 2nd owner in Bedfordshire in 1975, fully rebuilt from radiator to rearlights by me the following year, then sold on in 1977. Would love to know if it's still on the road.

Thanks for the welcome. Pictures? I wish. Somewhere buried deep in the loft are some b/w prints and 35mm colour slides I took during the rebuild. One day I hope to find them.

Otherwise the only record I have is a tape recording (audio) of a series of standing start acceleration runs. But that's a bit academic really - who can forget the howl of a Lotus twin cam engine!

Did we meet at the Gaydon L/C event in 2000? I remember a helpful soul looking through the register of known (at that time) surviving Mk.1s and I think we deduced SPU 9xxD was a series of works cars (SPU is an old Essex prefix). I also recall mentioning my amazement at discovering two pristine red/gold MK.1s under a tarpaulin in the corner of an Alan Mann Aviation hangar at Fairoaks airport during a visit there circa 1984/1985.

A friend of mine in Essex had a red/gold shell from the race team at the time and reshelled his damaged car HLO 1C - did you know it?

SPU 302D is alive and well and living with Pete Pascoe in Essex. It is a November 1966 1500 Super Auto MkII Cortina. Has less than 40k on the clock.

In 2007 it did the Cortina's to Cortina run with Graham Orchard driving. It was "unwell" on the way back and is currently undergoing a light restoration.

It is one of the earliest surviving MkII's that i know of.

No idea on SPU 995D.

Thanks everyone for all the responses. Great to know these cars still have an enthusiastic following. When I owned mine there was quite a following and I knew several guys with Mk.1s and a solitary gold Mk.2.

Bryan Morecroft owned a mk1 SPU ***D, used to call it spud for obvious reasons. Put an add for information wanted on ect.....in the MK1 cortina oc by-monthly mag.
