Group,
I'm in the final stages of building a 1600 crossflow Kent for my 65 Morgan 4/4.
The block came from a 71 Pinto (US) and has a 711M casting number.
I've fitted a new "uprated" intake manifold and Weber 32/36 carburetor.
I've also secured a used gulp valve assembly (separation chamber, pcv valve, hose, fittings.)
However, I'm puzzled by the presence of an extra 1/4"+ hole in the right side of the block. This hole is aft of the fuel pump and just forward of the bellhousing flange. There are no threads in the hole.
I mentioned the gulp valve because I originally thought that this extra hole was used as part of this system.
However, on examination of the parts, I can't see how it would be connected or what function it would serve.
Can anyone tell me what this hole is for?
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
Warren

Re: Unidentified hole in 1600 block
Could it be an alternative position for a dipstick when the sump bowl is at the rear of the engine?

Re: Unidentified hole in 1600 block
I didn't know there was an alternate sump position for these motors, but if so, that's a distinct possibility.
It's the right size (3/8" rather than 1/4" as earlier reported) and is angled slightly towards the center of the sump,

As walone suggested, the hole is for a dipstick.
As luck would have it, there was a Lotus 7 at our local Cars and Coffee this morning that had a 1.6 crossflow with the dipstick tube in this location.
