Stolen Cortinas

A cortina was stolen in 1972. I"m trying to find it when the plate and VIN number are no longer known. Anyone knowledgable about how to locate stolen cortinas, please reply to my question below.
My question:
Does anyone in this forum know how to locate a stolen cortina when the owner no longer has the plate or VIN number for it? I tried contacting the DMV, but it said it couldn't find the car without a plate or VIN number, even if the owner gave his drives license number and info off his driver's license.
It would seem, with the DMV, just giving a driver's license number to dig up old driving records would be enough to find an old VIN on a car the driver had registered back 40 years.
Anyone with some information about how to get the VIN on such a stolen cortina, please reply to this post.

There were over a million Mk 1's, over a million Mk 2's and Ford were well on their way to manufacturing the millionth Mk 3 by 1972, so tracking down a car without so much as a model type woulpd be just about impossible.
Try the Police Hank, they may still have the crime reports from that period.

do you have any info at all from the ID plate?
old rego number of the car maybe?
receipt from when you purchased it ?
things like that..

Hank it would be interesting to know why you need this information, as you say "A cortina was stolen" not my cortina was stolen, are you asking a general question or do you have a specific cortina in mind.

You could contact
http://www.abi.org.uk/ but they will need details of the name of the insured at the time of the theft and also which insurance company paid out on the vehicle. Remember that the car in question is now the property of that insurer...
Must ask though, why do you want this kind of info?

Seedy - isn't the DMV in the US? I'm assuming thats where that car is / was .
