1964 EPT 436B

Post by ppeterpentz »

Scott pointed me to a discussion taking place back in Nov. / Dec 95 regarding EPT 436B.
I am happy to report that it did not dissapear, or get totally lost or destroyed, it is safely in my garage in Saint Charles (40 miles west of Chicago), USA, undergoing an extensive rebuild.

As best as I can remember, the car left England around 85/86, and started at a Car dealer in New York. It then spent some time as a road car I think in New York area, and in the early 90s was sold to Bob Atrell, a Toyota dealer in Toronto Canada, who built it (very crudely) into a race car for Classic Racing in Canada / US events.
In Bob's hands (he was a well accomplished club racer) it developed a reputation as being almost unbeatable in Classic Racing, winning the Canadian Vintage Championship several times.
I purchased it from Bob around 2001, tried it out on the race track. It was blindingly fast, but we quickly realized it needed a lot of help !
Decided I wanted it to return to being a street car, so started restoring it in 2003, but it's been a stop start episode. Finally got into it good and propper about 2 years ago again, and it is now 2/3 restored, and close to going into the paint shop.
I'll dig out the exact details on the previous owners and dates in the next few days and post them.
I'd really be interested in knowing it's history before leaving England, and if available any documentation, photos etc.
Please come back to me if you have any information.

Hi Peter - I'm suprised its taken you so long to join up!

It would be great to see some recent pictures of your restoration.

I think you'll need to run it with a set of original period correct UK registration plates on it. 8)

Hey Steve,
I could get away with running the original plates here in the US, and for the sake of legality just post the local registration plate in the rear window :D
Any ideas where I can get a set of the original UK plates made ?
Really doesn't matter if it is registered in my name in the UK, but that opens up another question - do you know if the original registration EPT 436B is available. If it is a once only registration fee I'm game, I have locations in the UK I could use as a "home" address.

It's a bit out of date now, but this is the location where you can see the whole (painful) process of restoration, complete with photos -

Pete - you can order a set of plates here:

http://www.classicplatesonline.co.uk/plates.asp

You need plate style 3. I used one of those on the rear and a stick on one on the front (style 9) . You can buy these plates without proof of ownership , but it may be best to get them shipped to a UK address first - just in case.

The actual registration number EPT 436B would have gone back to the DVLA when the car was exported so should not be on another car - unless the regitstration was transferred to another car before export , but that is unlikely as it is not a "cherished" plate , eg it doesn't have a value.

You cannot apply for a UK registration doc for a car that in not here. There is not point anyway.

For those who are following this, and I have seen a couple of messages relating to EPT 436B, I finally dug out the old papers and documented the history, and it makes for an interesting read - see below.
There is a hole in its history in the mid 80's and I hope somebody out there can help fill it in.

1-Apr-64 to 10-May-64 Dealer
5-Oct-64 to 1-Mar-82 David John Womalie, Essex
1-Oct-78 to 1-Mar-82 ??????? Registration paper on April 16th 1982 indicates one previous owner from October 1978
1-Mar-82 to 16-Apr-82 Dealer
16-Apr-82 to 19-Feb-85 David Chennells, Chelmsford
19-Feb-85 to 17-Sep-85 Dealer - R J Burell, Rettenden, Essex
EXPORTED TO USA
25-Oct-85 to March 24th 86 Chris O'Donnell Engineering, Inc., Irvine, California
24-Mar-86 to 25-Apr-93 John Kelly, Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA
EXPORTED to CANADA
25-Apr-93 to 26-Feb-01 Bob Attrell, Ontario, Canada (converted to Vintage race car)
IMPORTED BACK to USA
26-Feb-01 to current date Peter Pentz, first Knoxville, Tennessee, then moved to Chicago, Illinois
Currently under extensive restoration
